Purpose: "The
Brookings Institution, one of Washington's oldest [1927]
think tanks, is an independent, nonpartisan organization devoted to

Cato
Institute
Purpose: "The Cato
Institute was founded in 1977 by Edward H. Crane. It is a nonprofit
public policy research foundation headquartered in Washington, D.C. The
Institute is named for Cato's
Letters, a series of libertarian pamphlets that helped lay the
philosophical foundation for the American Revolution."

for American Progress (CAP)
Purpose:
"The Center for American Progress is a
nonpartisan research and educational institute dedicated to promoting a
strong, just and free America that ensures opportunity for all. We
believe Americans are bound together by a common commitment to these
values and we aspire to ensure our national policies reflect these
values."

on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP)
Purpose:
"The Center on Budget and
Policy Priorities is one of the nation’s premier policy organizations
working at the federal and state levels on fiscal policy and public
programs that affect low- and moderate-income families and individuals."

Institute (CEI)
Purpose:
"The Competitive Enterprise Institute is a nonprofit public policy
organization dedicated to the principles of free enterprise and limited
government. We believe that consumers are best helped not by government
regulation but by being allowed to make their own choices in a free
marketplace."
Economic
Policy Institute (EPI)
Purpose:
"EPI was the first — and remains the premier —
organization to focus on the economic condition of low- and
middle-income Americans and their families. Furthermore, it adheres to
strict standards of sound, objective research and analysis and couples
its findings with outreach and popular education."
Ethics
and Public Policy Center (EPPC)
Purpose:
"The Ethics and Public Policy Center was
established in 1976 to clarify and reinforce the bond between the
Judeo-Christian moral tradition and the public debate over domestic and
foreign policy issues."
Freedom
Forum
Purpose: "The
Freedom Forum is a nonpartisan foundation dedicated to free press, free
speech and free spirit for all people. The foundation focuses on three
priorities: the Newseum, First Amendment freedoms and newsroom
diversity."
Freedom
House
Purpose: "Nonpartisan
and broad based, Freedom House is led by a board of trustees composed of
leading Democrats, Republicans, and independents; business and labor
leaders; former senior government officials; scholars; writers; and
journalists. All are united in the view that American leadership in
international affairs is essential to the cause of human rights and
freedom.
"Over
the years, Freedom House has been at the center of the struggle for
freedom. It was an outspoken advocate of the Marshall Plan and NATO in
the 1940s, of the U.S. civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s, of
the Vietnam boat people in the 1970s, of Poland's Solidarity movement
and the Filipino democratic opposition in the 1980s, and of the many
democracies that have emerged around the world in the 1990s."
Galen
Institute
Purpose:
"The Galen Institute, Inc., is a
not-for-profit, free-market research organization devoted exclusively to
health policy. It was founded in 1995 by Grace-Marie Turner to promote a
more informed public debate over individual freedom, consumer choice,
competition, and diversity in the health sector."
Harvard
AIDS Institute
Purpose:
"For almost two decades, the Harvard AIDS Institute has been
dedicated to promoting research, education, and leadership to end the
AIDS epidemic. As the number of AIDS cases continues to escalate
disproportionately in Africa and other resource-scarce settings, the
Institute has directed its research efforts toward developing prevention
and treatment strategies to stem the epidemic in these regions.
"The Institute partners with organizations
in Africa and other regions of the world to develop sustained education
and training programs. The training of international scientists and
health professionals helps to produce a cadre of experts able to
facilitate and lead the development of health care strategies and
interventions that will benefit individuals, families, and societies in
resource-scarce areas."
Hoover
Institution, Stanford University
Purpose:
"The Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace, Stanford
University, is a public policy research center devoted to advanced study
of politics, economics, and political economy—both domestic and
foreign—as well as international affairs. With its world-renowned
group of scholars and ongoing programs of policy-oriented research, the
Hoover Institution puts its accumulated knowledge to work as a prominent
contributor to the world marketplace of ideas defining a free society."

Institute
Purpose:
"As a public policy think tank, Hudson Institute forecasts
long-term trends and designs near-term solutions for government,

determination to preserve America's national security."
Institute
for Research on Poverty (IRP)
Purpose: "The
Institute for Research on Poverty is a university-based center for
research into the causes and consequences of poverty and social
inequality in the United States. It is nonprofit and nonpartisan.
"The
Institute was established in 1966 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison
by the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity, the organization given
responsibility for reducing poverty in America. In the years since
then, the Institute's multidisciplinary affiliates have formulated and
tested basic theories of poverty and inequality, developed and evaluated
social policy alternatives, and analyzed trends in poverty and economic
well-being."
Manhattan
Institute
Purpose:
"For
25 years, the Manhattan Institute has been an important force in shaping
American political culture. We have supported and publicized research on
our era’s most challenging public policy issues: taxes, welfare,
crime, the legal system, urban life, race, education, and many other
topics. We have won new respect for market-oriented policies and helped
make reform a reality.

Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC)
Purpose:
The mission of
MassINC is to develop a public agenda for Massachusetts that promotes
the growth and vitality of the middle class. We envision a growing,
dynamic middle class as the cornerstone of a new commonwealth in which
every citizen can live the American Dream. Our governing
philosophy is rooted in the ideals embodied by the American Dream: equality
of opportunity, personal responsibility and a strong commonwealth.
MassINC is a non-partisan, evidence-based organization.

Economies
Purpose: "Open Economies is a business-oriented, technology-savvy
policy center at Harvard supporting developing country leadership to
bridge digital divides. We are focused on digital
entrepreneurship—promoting trade in digital goods and services
originating in the developing world, and helping to encourage
information and communication technology-based businesses around the
world.
"We are based at Harvard Law School, Berkman
Center for Internet & Society. We are participants in the G-8
Group of Nations Digital Opportunity Task Force, the United Nations ICT
Task Force, and the World Economic Forum Digital Divide Task Force. We
are supported financially and through pro bono contributions by
Hewlett-Packard, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, and
GeoPartners Ventures."
Pew
Charitable Trusts
Purpose: "The Pew Charitable Trusts
serves the public
interest by providing information, policy solutions, and support for civic
life. Based in Philadelphia,
with an office in Washington, D.C., the Trusts make investments to
provide organizations and citizens with fact-based research and practical
solutions for challenging issues. In 2003, with approximately $4.1 billion
in dedicated assets, the Trusts committed more than $143 million to 151
nonprofit organizations."
RAND
Purpose: "For more than 50 years,
decision makers in the public and private sectors have turned to the RAND
Corporation for objective analysis and effective solutions that address
the challenges facing the nation and the world. These challenges include
such critical social and economic issues as education, poverty, crime,
and the environment, as well as a range of national security
issues."
Stockholm
International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)
Purpose: SIPRI
has built its reputation and standing on competence, professional
skills, and the collection of hard data and precise facts, rendering
accessible impartial information on weapon developments, arms transfers
and production, military expenditure, as well as on arms limitations,
reductions and disarmament. The task of the Institute is to conduct
'scientific research on questions of conflict and cooperation of
importance for international peace and security with the aim of
contributing to an understanding of the conditions for peaceful solution
of international conflicts and for a stable peace.'
"The Swedish Parliament decided that the
Institute be established on 1 July 1966 with the legal status of an
independent foundation. All SIPRI research is based exclusively on open
sources."
Urban
Institute
Purpose:
"April 1968 — A blue-ribbon
commission of government officials and civil leaders, set up by
President Johnson, charters a nonprofit nonpartisan research institute
to look at America's cities and urban populations. . . . [Today] the
Urban Institute measures effects, compares options, shows which
stakeholders get the most and least, tests conventional wisdom, reveals
trends, and makes costs, benefits, and risks explicit."
